Project description
Long-term symbioses inflict drastic genomic changes for both host and microbe. But the factors contributing to these convergent features remain poorly understood. The proposed project leverages a recently evolved defensive mutualism to define the mechanisms of incipient genome erosion and adaptation of a symbiont to its animal host. The successful candidate will define the genomic architecture and functional gene content of a culturable symbiont using genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics in combination with in vitro assays.
