Population Genomics and Genome Evolution in Brown Algae
Advisor: Susana Coelho
Location: Max Planck Institute for Biology
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our department to investigate population genomics and genome evolution in brown algae, with a focus on the model brown alga Ectocarpus and kelp species (Coelho, 2024; Denoeud et al., 2024). The successful candidate will analyze extensive population genomic datasets already generated in our lab as part of several ongoing projects (e.g.: Barrera-Redondo et al., 2025; Lotharukpong et al., 2024), with opportunities to expand these resources through additional sampling and sequencing.
The project will explore fundamental questions in genome evolution, including patterns of natural variation, population structure, pan-genome diversity, and the short-scale evolutionary dynamics of transposable elements (TEs; (Dinatale et al., 2025)). This work will provide novel insights into the mechanisms shaping genome architecture and adaptation in complex multicellular algae.
The position offers a stimulating, collaborative environment with close interactions with international partners in Mexico and Australia. Candidates with a background in bioinformatics, evolutionary genomics, or related fields are particularly encouraged to apply
