Core training and development opportunities


Scientific writing 
This workshop aims to provide you with the expertise to prepare a thesis proposal (that you need for your first TAC). You are guided to identify the main concepts of their research project, place them within the framework of general grant writing guidelines and to critically review and edit their work. Detailed individual feedback is provided by the tutor.

Scientific presentation 
This workshop provides you with formal training for the presentations you will give during your first TAC meeting and at the PhD Symposium. The workshop covers planning a talk, slide design, use of the voice and how to avoid hitches. You will receive individual feedback on your presentation.

Responsible Conduct in Research
This workshops gives you an introduction to research ethics. It involves speakers from within and outside the school, practical examples and group discussion exercises. You will also meet the Ombudsperson of the Max Planck Institute.

Working with images
This 2-day workshop provides training in the effective use of relevant softwares to prepare high quality images for presentations and publications. Special care is taken to provide guidelines regarding the proper handling of digital image data including discussion of examples that illustrate pitfalls and inappropriate practices. 

Your final year workshop
This short workshop aims to help you to develop a practical and realistic plan for completion of your PhD on time.

Introductory Course
This course introduces you to all faculty members and their scientific expertise, as well as the methods and infrastructure available. The course also allows new students to get to know each other and build a social network.  

PhD Retreat
The annual PhD Retreat, a student-only event, takes place at an external venue during the summer. By bringing together all PhD students working in different disciplines and at different thesis stages, the retreat offers the opportunity for every PhD student to benefit from the overall scientific scope and knowledge of our doctoral community.

PhD Symposium
A highlight of the annual calendar is the PhD Symposium every autumn. All PhD students and faculty attend the two days filled with research presentations, discussions and networking.

Seminar attendance
Our PhD students are expected to regularly attend selected seminars from the seminar series offered by the participating institutes featuring renowned international and national speakers. We strongly encourage you to take any opportunity to also listen to and learn from speakers who are not working in your field. Often there will be the opportunity to meet speakers over lunch or in 1-1 meetings.
